How to choose the best eyeglasses for your face shape and skin tone

Beyond giving you crystal clear vision, your eyeglasses can change the way the world sees you – and how you see the world.

Eyeglasses are an expression of your style and personality. Confidence comes with wearing a beautiful pair of eyeglasses in a frame and colour that flatters your face. Here’s how to choose the right shape and colour for your face and skin tone.

The best frame shapes for different face shapes

Not all frames are made for all faces. Take the time to try on different makes and styles. See how they look and importantly, how they make you feel. You should avoid frames that are disproportionately large or small compared to your face. Your frames should be in slight contrast to the shape of your face.

Oval face

Oval face shapes have balanced proportions. Choose a frame that is as wide, or wider than, the broadest part of your face rather than frames that are too narrow as this will distort the natural symmetry of your face.

Oblong face

Choose frames that have more depth than width, have decorative or contrasting temples that add width to the face, or a low bridge to shorten the nose. This will make an oblong face appear shorter and more balanced.

Round face

Round face shapes are the same in width and length. To make your face look longer and slimmer, try more angular styles and frames that have more width than depth. Rimless, round, and small frames will make your face appear rounder.

Diamond face

Diamond faces have narrower foreheads and jawlines, with high cheekbones. To soften your cheekbones and draw attention to your eyes, choose a rimless or cat-eye frame. Frames with distinctive brow lines or detailing will also work. Stay away from frames that are boxy or narrow.

Square Face

Square faces have strong jawlines and broad foreheads, with the length and width of the face in equal proportions. To make your face appear longer and to soften the angles, choose narrow frames that have more width than depth. Avoid boxy and angular frames as they can make your face appear boxier.

Base-up triangle

Also known as heart-shaped, these face shapes have broad foreheads and narrow chins. Choose frames that are wider at the bottom and light in colour. Light materials and rimless styles will minimize the perception of width at the top of the face.  Avoid frames with a heavier brow line or detailing that draws more attention to your forehead.

Base-down triangle

This face shape is the reverse of the heart shape, with a wider chin and narrow forehead. Choose frames that are accentuated with colour or detailing on the top to create the perception of width at the top of the face. Cat-eye styles also complement based-down triangle-shaped faces.

The best colour frames for different skin tones

Consider the colour of your eyes and your skin tone when choosing your frame colour. You should choose a frame colour that is close to your base colour.

Warm complexion

If you have yellow, bronze, peach or golden undertones (think olive skin and hazel eyes), choose frames in Autumn colours such as light tortoiseshell, brown, gold, honey, beige, olive green or warm red.

Cool complexion

If you have pink or blue undertones (think fair skin and blonde hair), choose Wintery colours such as silver, grey, blue, pink, mauve, purple, dark tortoiseshell or black.

Neutral complexion

If you have a mix of pink and golden undertones (think dark skin and blue eyes), you can get away with wearing frames in almost any colour. Place more emphasis on choosing the right shape frame for your face.
